Lara Schmitz- Viola
Lara Schmitz is General Manager for The Shakespeare Company and her artistic involvement has included assistant directing The Winter’s Tale and playing Brutus in the Julius Caesar outreach show in Fall 2013. In Twelfth Night, she plays Viola.
What excites you most about working on Twelfth Night? The people working on the show. Kate Newby has an infectious passion and vision for this show, and many of the people in the room simply have to breathe to cause me to burst out laughing. (And snorting)
How would you describe your character? Viola is feisty, smart, and a tad weird.
What’s your favourite quote from the play? “I warrant there’s vinegar and pepper in’t.” (Aguecheek, Act 3, scene 4)
How did you get drawn to Shakespeare? In grade 10, I was Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I remember the rehearsal where we staged the “I am not yet so low but that my nails can reach into thine eyes”- I loved the scene so much because I got to leap into the air to attack Helena, but was caught mid-air and held back by Lysander and Demetrius. Then when I read The Winter’s Tale during University like it was Harry Potter, my love was sealed.
